Thanks, Aunt Annie! The driving just seemed so pointless to me. Plus, none of my babies were ever able to "transfer" from the car without waking up.

We'll be taking our singed pancake off to college in a couple of days. She's truly an amazing girl...has blown me away with her innate wisdom, taught me so much about life and love.

Oh, Janet- you've given me such a wonderful laugh. 'You always burn the first pancake!' Hysterical!

And I'll put my hand up for driving my son all the way across town regularly out of sheer desperation. If I'd only known then what I know now...!!!

I also speak to infants as if they are adults. I sometimes ask them questions. Their body language broadcasts their answers. I don't have kids of my own but I do work with children. It is quite evident that children are taking in information and looking for ways to communicate long before they articulate their first word.

In observing infants it seems that they know by the tone of our voices if we are having a pleasant phone conversation or talking to a bill collector. I think of the time before a child forms words as a silent stage of processing the information about the physical and emotional world around them.

Great advice! It's remarkable what babies understand just by the tone of your voice and your attitude towards them. And as they grow older and learn a few words, I think it becomes a matter of not speaking 'down' to them. It always makes me cringe when a dentist or doctor feels he must do a slapstick or song-and-dance routine to distract my son in order to perform a simple check-up. How insulting. My boy knows full well why he's in the office and what's going to occur -- because I respect him enough to explain before the visit! Happily, my boy is too polite to roll his eyes and ask the doc to just get on with it. Unfortunately, I'm not... And there was the time a nurse waved a colorful stuffed animal high in the air to distract my 4-year old so the doctor could sneak up on him with a hypodermic... Ahhh! Suffice to say that ended our relationship with that particular office.

Thanks for this fabulous blog, Janet. There is so much common sense truth in everything you write. I'm looking forward to more. And more. And more.
